Mickey Edwards poised to become Waratahs 44th NSW representative

Local junior Mickey Edwards has been selected in the 13 man NSW squad for the upcoming JLT Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia in Perth, beginning on the Thursday 8th February.

It is an achievement that everyone at the TravelSIM Waratahs is very proud of, but also extremely happy for Mickey.

If Mickey plays, he will become the Waratahs 44th NSW first-class representative and the first since Jay Lenton in November 2015.

He will also be the first local junior to play for NSW since Tim Cruickshank in October 2010. In fact, Mickey will be the first player from our Junior Pathway Program to play first class cricket, and exciting piece of information for the entire Northern Beaches cricket community.

The 13 man squad includes 5 fast bowlers, including Gordon quick and good friend of Mickey’s, Charlie Stobo, Gurinder Sandhu from the Fairfield Club, and Trent Copeland from St George and Harry Conway from Easts.

At this stage it looks as if Trent Copeland is the only one of the 5 who looks certain to play, but we have it on good authority that Mickey is a very big chance to be in the starting XI.

If selected, it would be a fantastic rise for Mickey considering all the set-backs he has encountered.

After helping the Tahs to the 1st grade title in 2013/14, Mickey was rewarded with a NSW rookie contract for the 2014/15 season, but broke down in pre-season with a back injury. He subsequently missed most the next 2 years, returning to the bowling crease during a few failed comebacks.

Even this year when his back has been good, he managed to get a stress fracture in his left leg after playing in the first 3 1st grade games of the season.

However, Mickey made a successful comeback for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL, playing against the Melbourne Renegades.

He has since played the last 2 grade matches, taking 5 wickets across 2 innings against Blacktown in Round 11, and then another 2 in the Round 1`2 victory over Bankstown.

Stay tuned to all of our Social Media channels with further information closer to the match on Thursday about whether Mickey will be playing in the final XI, usually announced just before the toss of the coin.

Well done again Mickey from everyone at the Manly Warringah Waratahs and in the broader Manly Warringah cricket community.
