Coming off a tie against Sydney (a long story in itself), the boys faced a tough challenge against competition leaders Sutherland. Sitting only 9 points behind them, the game was shaping as a near top of the table clash and the standard of cricket certainly reflected the position of both teams on the ladder. Winning the toss on a great batting track, the guys got off to a great start. Jack Ritchie (108) ,Luke Cameron (24) and Ben King (34) got the guys to 2/118 before lunch before Nat Hill (44) and Jack took us to a commanding 2/200 at the half way mark. A big total was always looking likely from there, and Ed Burgess (32) Ryan Bonnor (65) and Pete Lindsay (43) all made sure that the total was very healthy by stumps. By day’s end the guys had compiled 390 and were looking to be in a position of strength.

The second day got off to a flyer with a direct hit run out by Nat Hill leaving the home team 1/1. While there was some resistance thereafter, a relatively steady flow of wickets had Sutherland struggling at 5/150. However, a 6th wicket partnership of around 160 put the home team back on top, and by tea they needed just 85 runs with 4 wickets. After tea they moved to within 33 runs of victory, and with their skipper on 134,and the track looking very flat, things were looking bleak for the Manly boys. That was until Ryan Bonnor (2/63) made the crucial breakthrough removing the opposition captain one over before the new ball. The new ball was taken straight away, and two more quick wickets to Daivd Poskitt (4/76) and Corrie Boss (2/55) suddenly had Manly one wicket away from victory with 15 runs in hand. But this game was never going to end without a bit more drama. With 1 run to draw and 2 to win, Robbie Brindle snared a full length catch down leg side to steal the 6 points in ludicrous circumstances. As you could imagine the guys went completely nuts. They also leapt a few spots on the ladder to sit 3rd overall and less than one win away from first place.

A result that was seemingly always going to be difficult after the 1st ball of the day set the tone for the visiting Manly 4th grade.

With the home side at 3/ 65 and chasing a meagre total on a docile wicket, early wickets were going to be the key to creating dressing room pressure and a bit of angst amongst the incoming panel of batsmen. With the intent of pushing the scoring along at a rate of knots for something to occur later in the afternoon session, the visitors were all about creating a set of circumstances to swing the balance of the match in their favour.

Even though the visitors fielded reasonably well in the early pre-drinks session, a lack of concentration led to a chance going down in the first over of the day - letting the home side off the hook and able to re-establish their authority. With the heat blazing down throughout, the Manly side toiled without much luck. As the score progressed without the loss of wickets, our heads began to bow in a southern direction. Sutherland had ticked along to 4/165 at tea with a small lead of 20 odd, and another 45 overs left in the day. It was only after the adjournment that there was any real purpose in the match with the home side now intent on building a reasonable total in which to create their own scoreboard pressure. Having seen the visitors collapse the previous week where 9 wickets were lost for 74 runs they were well within their rights to think an outright was possible.

Nick McLachlan and Matty Mee were again the pick of the bowlers with Nick capturing 3 wickets (13 now in 3 innings) while solid support was provided by a trio of spinners in Adam Gummer, Craig Rupert and Logan Weston. Lance Griffiths is slowing earning an all-rounder tag as opening bat and first change bowler, and will be better in the seasons ahead when he recognises his talents with bat and ball and understands the role he plays.

The Manly side’s 2nd innings, although with a couple of hiccups, ended relatively anonymously at 2 /120 with Logan Weston clubbing 48no - the visitors losing on 1st innings.

There was certainly a lot to learn from this match, a contest against a finals-bound team where throughout, the fielding on Day 2 lacked overall concentration and a will to front the challenge and return with a dogged fight. The mongrel was missing and when the opposition were on top, patience was lost with an eye on the opposition strategy rather than on their own game plan.

The team has come a long way, with some excellent recent performances - again, consistency is sought in the remaining games to regain the confidence to win on a regular basis and mix it with the better sides in the competition.

Manly v Sutherland
Toss Won by: Sutherland Batted First: Sutherland

Manly-Warringah, 104, and 9 for 142. Loss on first innings
Sutherland, 217. Win on first innings

Outstanding Performances:
Manly-Warringah (1st inn) J McDougall 50 G Geraghty 3-12 M Smith 3-28
Manly-Warringah (2nd inn) P Hartig-Franc 52 J Badyari 47no G Geraghty 4-35 M Smith 2-16
Sutherland (1st inn) B Seville 49 L Casey 34 P Hartig-Franc 3-33 D Marshall 3-42 S Lyon 2-19

Full of confidence in our ability and desire to score 217 to beat Sutherland in 80 overs with 7 wickets in hand, we set out the chase in positive style. Both McCallum-Toomey and McDougall got off to a good start, even though the wicket looked tired and had the grass shaved off revealing the hills and dales that had perplexed us since this wicket had been first used.

On a warm afternoon, Nick McT was the first to depart, caught at slip (having been unbelievably dropped by their keeper). Jimmy McD then took to the bowling and scored a quick-fire 50, by which time we were 4-74 and the visitors heads were beginning to drop.

Suddenly, it was all over. Jimmy, calling for a suicide single to mid-wicket, was run out by some way and Jordan Meredith joined Luke Grant who had been looking composed. Jordan was then the beneficiary of one of the worst dropped catches I have ever seen - at short leg (was even worse than Roy Formica's at Perranporth, if possible!) by captain Doc Givney. Luke was next to go, caught at second slip trying to work one down to third man, and then Jordan played on. Matt came and went in one ball, comprehensively bowled, and Dylan joined in with some swashbuckling blows while Javed, coming in lower than expected, was also bowled. Ben Skelton, under the weather with a virus, looked good before Dylan tried one slog too many, and we were all out for 104 and asked to bat again.

The second innings began poorly. With Luke asked to open, he left one outside off only to see it cut and remove his off stump. Jarrod was then given out caught behind by the keeper (who was the only one to appeal) to a that shot saw him hitting the crease - the first of three terrible decisions that were to confront us. Next, Jimmy McD was given out LBW having clearly nicked it into his pads, and Jordan Meredith was given out LBW for leg glancing a ball that had moved with the wind towards fine leg. Luckily, the resolve we had sought in the first innings was there through the efforts of Phil Hartig- Franc and Javed who scored both gutsy and patient half centuries, and despite the last few overs of panic we closed on 9-139 thus avoiding the outright. Losing 16 wickets on one day is not what anyone likes to see, but the positive note to end on is that these two batsmen dug deep and got us out of a hole. So, well done guys.

We will have to train harder this week if we are to challenge teams of a similar standing as us in the upcoming weeks. Let's not waste all the hard work we have done this season through any lack of effort or resolve.
